Apple TV 2.0: more features, more problems?

I love my Apple TV. And there is no doubt that I love it even more since I updated to 2.0 software. I think it's the best thing since sliced bread. BUT, I have to say, since I updated to 2.0, I seems to have more problems with it than when I was using 1.1.

Here are just some of the problems I am experiencing.

  • Apple TV gets disconnected from WiFi network every time it wakes up from sleep mode.
  • The user interface is slow to respond. Although the signals from the remote get through, the interface sometimes takes a few seconds to respond (sometimes minutes!).
  • Apple TV icons drops from iTunes more often that it used to. This is both on the computer that it syncs with and also the one it streams from.
  • It freezes a couple of times a week.

Though all these problems are there, I have no plan to go back to using 1.1 any time soon. I still like to rent my HD movies from my Apple TV.

So, am I just being a whiner or are you experiencing the same thing? Let me know.

I've noticed the slowness but not your other problems. Never had it drop connection, drop from iTunes or freeze and we use ours for virtually everything we watch on the tube. My ATV connects to an Airport Extreme set to dedicated N mode at 5Ghz. I have an Airport Express that is used for G/B devices. This means that the Extreme won't drop out of N when using my iPhone.

A couple of things I've found:
- I have it set to sync the 5 latest unwatched movies and it seems to send the same one over and over again.
- I've -ahem- downloaded and converted some blueray-sourced .mkv files and for the first hour or so of the movie the video can't keep up with the sound. Pausing it for 15 seconds then starting it again corrects the problem for about 15 minutes. Not sure what's going on here although it may be that there is just too much data for ATV to process? I haven't tinkered with VisualHub settings. Converted regular DVDs play fine.

I'm hoping that a 2.01 isn't too far away.

Same here, only slower reaction time concerning the remote. The slowest is scrolling through video podcasts. GeekBrief takes it's sweet time reacting to a click. That's the only issue for me.

Luck, maybe a return to 1.1 and then upgrading again may help some of this other stuff. It sounds worse than normal. Slight corruption with the download or something?

I had the wifi problem with 1.1 too. It wouldn't be so annoying if I didn't have to re-type my wifi password every time I want to use the thing! The remote reaction time seems slow to me as well.

I have been experiencing almost identical problems since upgrading my original (40 Gig) ATV. I have a very strong signal in the room so I don't think it is signal strength related. I have found I can restore the icons only if I remove the Podcast from my favorites, exit back to the main screen, and then reselect the Podcast and add it back to my favorites. Another nuisance I have experienced in Favorite Podcasts is losing the ability to select podcasts. This happened only after filling up the total available slots for Favorite Podcasts. I am not able to move around the screen by clicking on the remote and have to exit out of Favorites and then come back in before regaining control.

This is a well-known issue. Check out this thread in the Apple Forums:

http://discussions.apple.com/t...4&tstart=0

Nearly 5,000 views and over 150 replies. Maybe throw in your 2 cents there. It seems like everybody is having lag issues but Apple has yet to respond.

I haven't used mine extensively since I upgraded to 2.0 as I have it hooked up to sdtv, so using the video features doesn't make much sense. I use it mainly for playing music through my stereo. I do notice that it takes a while for it to show up in itunes. I have not had any problem with losing the network connection. Perhaps the netwoking problem is on the router/itunes end and not the atv?

It's not a network issue, it happens even when hardwired over Ethernet. It also happens if you only show synced content. Check out that discussion thread I posted above for tons of anecdotal evidence from lots of different users with lots of different configurations. It's looking like Apple rushed 2.0 out without a lot of QA testing. Hopefully a patch with address these issues soon.

Yep... seeing it too... Watching a streaming movie from my iTunes and everything just froze up network wise and had to power the AppleTV off and on to get it "back on the network". The only time so far though but will be watching closely.
