Archos TV+ now available for sale

You've heard about the Archos TV+ before; the product was announced many months back. It is Archos's answer to the Apple TV. And now it is finally available for sale.

If its features is any indication of what it can do, then Apple TV might have met its match (and more).  The Archos TV+'s feature list reads like a wish list for the Apple TV.  It can record TV shows, download movies and TV shows, stream content from PCs, surf the web, and even sync content with PCs.  Also impressive is its remote with a full keyboard built-in.

For downloadable content, Archos has partnered up with content providers like VODEO, CinemaNow, DailyMotion, musicMe and BurnLounge to give the users a variety of content for purchase.  However, there is no HD content available as of yet.

The Acrhos TV+ comes in two hard drive configurations:  80GB for $249.99 and 250GB for $349.99.

Wow, this sounds very impressive. I wonder how it measures up in terms of usability? At any rate, competition is a great thing. Hopefully Apple is paying attention.

you missed the important details.

looking at the Archos website, It's all Standard Definition only, VGA/DVD quality, no HD capabilities at all. there may never be HD content for this model, because it's not clear if the firmware can ever be updated for it. very probably not.

so it's real competition not for AppleTV, but for the TiVo Series 2.

and you'd have to be crazy to buy anything new that is not HD-capable these days.

yup, but added 'as of yet'. in this case 'yet' will almost certainly be 'never' since the hardware is VGA grade. not to say a future version won't do HD ... i'm surprised Archos put something so obsolete-out-of-the-box on the market, they've been releasing some impressive other stuff.
